SIC (US 1987) : History tells us that the term "undertaker" has been handed down from those who "undertook" to care for friends and neighbors at the time of death. Thus began the practice of applying human relationship in undertaking. This, in turn, has followed step by step the establishment of the professional funeral service of today. In 1907, Conger Funeral Home was established. This funeral home was started as a partnership of several businessmen but was later under the sole direction of Alvin Conger. He purchased the Wade House- a home in the residental district, yet only one block from the business district- to begin his goal of establishing a modern funeral home. In the 1950's Allen & Wilma Hooper, & TM Hooper purchased Conger Funeral Home and renamed it Smithville Funeral Home. Only one year after the purchase, they decided to sell the funeral home. James Cantrell and Tommy Love purchased the business and they changed the name to its current moniker, Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. The business had two establishments.The McMinnville office was managed by AJ Winton, and the Smithville office was managed by Allen and T. M. 's brother Billy Hooper. A few years passed and the business was sold yet again. When they heard the business was available once again, Allen & Wilma Hooper decided to repurchase the funeral home as they had realized they missed the interaction with the public. They decided to keep the name Love-Cantrell Funeral Home simply because they didn't want to go through the hassles they had faced when they changed the name from Conger Funeral Home to Smithville Funeral Home. The office remained in the Wade House until it was destroyed by fire during remodeling, in December of 1975. After the building was completely demolished, the Vanhooser Clinic was purchased and is still the home of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Allen D. Hooper passed away in 1998 and Wilma Hooper passed away in 2010. They are both laid to rest at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. The funeral home is now owned by Allen & Wilma's daughter and son-in-law Deloy and Diane Kirby. The funeral home is still very much a family business. Along with Deloy & Diane are their children following closely in their steps. Renee works in the accounting department, and Chad is the Funeral Director and licensed Insurance Agent.
